My Gadgets

1.   Zoom H1 Handy Recorder

Like all Zoom recorders, the H1's onboard microphones are configured in an X/Y pattern for stunning stereo imaging. Because both mics are arranged on the same axis, they are equidistant from the sound source for perfect localization and no phase shifting. The result is great stereo recordings with natural depth and accurate imaging. The H1's built-in directional microphones focus on the sound being recorded. Unlike omnidirectional microphones, which pick up sound all around indiscriminately, the H1 mics ignore the unwanted noise behind them. I normally use them as a microphone extension to my DSLR while recording my video playing guitar.

Jim Dunlop (2004-2006):
When people talk about wah pedals, they're talking about the Crybaby. This is the original—the one that created some of the most timeless sounds in rock. Relied on by Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, David Gilmour, and many other greats.
Features: Heavy die cast construction for years of reliability, 100K ohm Hot Potz potentiometer that allows for that quick, abrupt wah sound. Powered by the Dunlop ECB-003 AC Adapter and/or 9 volt battery.
    10" x 4" x 2-1/2" 3.7 lbs. Black

6. Korg ToneWorks 104ds Hyper Distortion

The distortion on it combined with the cab simulator feature makes this the best distortion pedal I’ve ever heard. So much distortion, so much control over the EQ. You can also switch between amp and line out and hi or low input(oddly, switching to low input gives more level, so I gather the choice is between high output pickups and low output). Having two setting available is also great. and the internal noise gate.

7.  Vox ToneLab ST

  • True-tube Valvetronix power! The power amp circuit features a 12AX7 triode vacuum tube for undeniable tube tone
  • Thirty-three amp models (the largest number in its class) range from classic vintage models and high-end boutique amps to modern high-gain designs and beyond
  • Mix and match the eleven cabinet models with any of the thirty-three amp models for complete flexibility
  • Twenty-five versatile effects allow ToneLab ST to be your one-stop tone shop – no other equipment required!
  • The editing sections for the amps and effects are completely independent, allowing direct visual editing
  • Simple ASIO-compatible USB audio connection to your computer
  • Download the free librarian software and manage programs on your computer, share presets with friends or online with the VOX Tone Room
  • Twenty “Song” presets provide spot-on recreations of instantly recognized rock guitar classics
  • Fifty preset programs are ready for immediate use, including twenty song presets. Fifty user programs are ready for your own custom sounds – for a total of 100 programs in memory!
  • The Amp/Line switch compensates for tone coloration based on feeding the ToneLab ST into a guitar amp, power amp or recording console
  • The AUX IN jack lets you jam along to CDs, MP3s, iTunes, or any other external audio source
  • In addition to wah or volume, the expression pedal can be Quick-Assigned to nearly any effect parameter for realtime control!
  • Stereo output creates depth and ambience, plus a realistic sense of acoustic space
  • Built-in Auto Chromatic tuner – with excellent visibility

The Modeling is quite good and realistic, it uses a 12AX7 tube in the output stage to keep the digital tone warmed up (you can see it on the right below, to the right of “VOX”). Models do not have a lifeless or thin digital feel, it feels pretty analog and some of the effects are analog for that purpose. It includes an expression pedal ( and the classic Vox Wah) and the classic AC sounds (including the Brain May Anniversary model which really kicks it… seriously). It is also VERY configurable for you tweak-heads out there, however, it does not require that you do that. You can grow into it if you wish as it has 50 factory presets and allows for you to copy any of them to 50 other positions to modify and save as personal favorites.
